Aloo tikki burger

Aloo tikki burger
Sorry for the dark photo. We were experimenting with the settings on the camera.

This meal transpired because of the burger buns we found at a small bakery close to us. A quality bun, slightly on the large side. The burger itself was a bit of what was in the kitchen at the time. Potatoes, peas, carrots, onions and some mint-corriander chutney that needed to be used. After mixing all of it together, I shaped the mixture into patties, dipped them in beaten egg, covered them with rava (semolina) and shallow fried them. I also made some potato crisps and a small salad to go with the burger.

Tasty. The burger reminded me of the McAloo Tikki. The iconic McDonald hamburger is not on offer in India. Chicken, fish and veggie options only. The few times that I have been, I've had their McAloo Tikki, a potato version. Carbs on carbs, just like we like it here! It's quite tasty but I can't compare to the real deal. I have never been to a McDonald's in the US of A.

Christmas carols in June

I barely finished my first cup of tea this morning and I found myself humming Silent Night. I often have the strangest songs stuck in my head in India. Like, the Bridal Chorus or Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On.

You see, certain cars that are manufactured in India come with a very special feature - music whilst in reverse gear. It is helpful I suppose, in a country where not all drivers are accustomed to scanning their rear view mirror for pedestrians and cows before stepping on the gas pedal in reverse gear. Jingle bells...watch out! I'm three inches away from you...one-horse open sleigh! Hey!

All's well and good until a new driver is trying to park his car in a tight parking spot in the neighbouring apartment building. After about 12 tries, which include several minutes of staying put in reverse gear, I hear the engine turn off. Success! The car is parked. But a tune has now insidiously lodged itself in my head! And this morning Silent Night it is. A mere six months before Christmas!

Welcome back!
